Meet Aisosa: Writer, Musician, Activist, Scholar
Incoming ABC Scholar Aisosa has already accomplished more than some high school seniors. An activist, author, and musician in addition to excelling in school, Washington D.C. native Aisosa has aspirations to solve issues on a global scale. “I’ve been in a place where nobody would help me and my voice wasn’t heard. I want to be that voice for others who don’t have a voice.”
Back in her home town Aisosa co-created a block party against gun violence, started a Gay Student Alliance in her middle school, and created a mentorship program for younger students to be paired with students in grades 7 and 8.
Aisosa is also an avid writer; her current project is non-fiction personal essays, Confessions of a Nigerian-American Teen. The series so far includes her writing on feminism and her experience of being a child of immigrants. While here in Andover she plans to write and reflect on her experiences as a black student in a predominantly white community.
She notes that she chose A Better Chance of Andover knowing that she would have access to academic help, transportation, and the supplies and supports that she would need to be successful in school. Her visit to the house where she met Larissa--and knew immediately that they could be great friends—sealed the deal.
With the school year starting, she is looking forward to joining her fellow Scholars in the Show Choir. She brings musical talent both in vocals and as an instrumentalist. She is learning to play the ukulele, which she brought to Andover, and she also plays the djembe and the talking drum, both of which originated in West Africa.
We look forward to witnessing and uplifting the path Aisosa creates for herself here with the myriad talents and passion for change she brings.
